Spectrophotometer Carrier Sheet Project
Published April 15, 2026 | by Duncan Mac Iver
A Spectrophotometer is a very specialized scientific instrument that measures the intensity of light reflected against a printed sample of material, so that we may create our very own ICC color profiles for each specific press that we print from, so that we don't have to send so many proofs to press for color accuracy.
In the image below, you can see the machine in action reading the printed color sample taped to the carrier sheet. Now, the standard carrier sheets sold from Barbieri are close to 200 dollars per sheet, so I was tasked by my manager to create a new carrier sheet to save the company quite a bit of money. I started by hand measuring our old carrier sheet and came up with a new "BPGraphics" branded design as you can see attached to the machine below. I cut out my prototypes on paper and I cut the final on the more expensive styrene material. This is something I created several years back around 2019 and we still use the same design to this day to create all our ICC profiles on all our machines!
Below is the base design for the carrier sheet as shown above attached to the spectrophotometer..
I tried to have a little fun and try to mimic the original branding from Barbieri and add a little BPGraphics parody to it. We have since changed our name to Convergent Print Group, but I have yet to update the aesthetics of the design.
Overall, this project was one of my first design experiences that paved the way for me to pursue CAD professionally.
